Holiday Activity Guide

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is right around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited. Christmas marks the time for a lot of things - great food, good company and some relaxation, what’s not to love? If you’re like us, and love the festivities that come hand in hand with Christmas, imagine what your kid feels like! (Hint: they’re off the freakin’ wall excited about it). Even if you’re not such a huge fan of the Yuletide season, you have to admit, there’s nothing quite like seeing bubs getting excited about presents and Santa. So, to capture all of the magic of Christmas for them (and hopefully keep them occupied for a few days in the school holidays) we’ve compiled a list of the best festive things to do throughout December.

The Grounds of Alexandria: The Nutcracker Exhibition

The Grounds of Alexandria are magical throughout the whole year, but they really take Christmas to another level. This year, they’ve installed ‘Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ (and it’s gorgeous). You and your kiddos will be able to experience the land of snowflakes, the land of sweets, and snow (yes, they’re making it snow in summer). Exploring The Grounds, and popping into the Cafe for a festive bite to eat is a great Christmas activity - unfortunately the official Santa photos are sold out, but who needs long lines for Santa photos when you’ve got an entire venue full of perfect photo opportunities to take adorable festive photos of bubs in! The installation is on now, and will continue all the way up to Christmas Eve, and the snow falls three times every day - this is on the top of our list!

Christmas Lights

Christmas lights mark the beginning of the socially acceptable period to be excited about Christmas (we’ve been excited since October), so checking out the best light displays is definitely going to put you in a jolly mood! The twinkling installations can be found just about anywhere, but the city lights up like nowhere else. St Mary’s Cathedral will be lit up with an incredible light show from December 6th until Christmas Day, and why not get some present shopping done whilst checking out the incredible Boulevard of Light that is currently cascading over Pitt Street Mall? If the bubs won’t cope with the late nights to see lights, there’s plenty of gorgeous decorations across the city - and pretty much everywhere! The David Jones window displays are festive masterpieces, and the QVB Swarovski Christmas Tree is a sight to be seen! These things, almost best of all, are free - so you can stress less about providing festive fun whilst trying to find the perfect new toy.

Sydney Christmas Children’s Concert

This Christmas extravaganza in Surry Hills was custom made for kiddos! There will be performances from Jimmy Giggle, Justine Clarke and SplashDance, as well as a ridiculous amount of hands-on activities to keep the little ones entertained for the entire event (which is a big deal!). They’ll be able to do Christmas craft, play giant Jenga with elves, and even get the chance to meet Santa. You’ll be able to purchase food, drinks and Santa stockings filled to the brim with goodies for the little ones with all of the proceeds going to Variety - The Children’s Charity, but entry to the event is free (which is always a plus). The evening will end with a fireworks display at 8:30, and by then the kiddies will be just about ready to drop from all the excitement! The event will be held on Saturday the 1st of December at Prince Alfred Park, we reckon it’s a great way to kick off the month of Christmas.

Carols in the Domain

Going to see Christmas carols is a time-old tradition - but it’s one that your kids will love to experience, and we reckon not many could rival the Carols in the Domain. The Domain becomes an explosion of festive music sung by Aussie artists, surrounded by great food, friends and family. There isn’t much more you could want! Technically the big main event doesn’t begin until 7:45pm, but there’s a bunch of pre-show entertainment starting at 3pm, and if you get in early, you can grab a prime picnic spot. If travelling into the middle of Sydney for carols doesn’t sound like your cup of tea (so. many. people.), then there’s bound to be carols local to wherever you are, that will be just as exciting for the kiddo, and allow you to stress less over Christmas activities.

Sydney Santa Spectacular

The Sydney Santa Spectacular has sold out 2 years running, and for good reason! Rosehill Gardens has been absolutely transformed into what could actually be mistaken for The North Pole. There’s a bunch of rides including a double-decker carousel, craft workshops, and ice-skating. Even Mrs Claus makes an appearance for story time if the kids are tuckered out. Tickets are $35 each, but there’s more than enough bang for your buck with all of the entertainment, and the ticket also covers your parking fee (plus kids under 2 get free entry - literal blessing). The Spectacular runs from December 7th-27th, so you have plenty of opportunities to take the little rascals to experience all the fun.

Are you excited yet? We sure are! Christmas is right around the corner, so keep an eye out for some more festive fun from us to come!
