How to find the Perfect Babysitter
Finding a babysitter to look after your child (aka your life and the wind beneath your wings), can be intimidating and seem like a scary thing, but it doesn’t have to be! Knowing what to look for and having a list of requirements and qualifications beforehand will help put your mind at ease.
Someone could have all the training and check all the boxes, but their personal qualities say A LOT about them. Meeting a potential babysitter face-to-face is the best way to see that they truly have the qualities that you are looking for. Some notable qualities to look for include being reliable and punctual (did they arrive on time), responsible and confident (have they got a confident demeanor, note-eye contact is important!), and most definitely someone that is patient and caring (a loving smile goes a long way). Ultimately you want someone that is able to build rapport with your children and someone you know you can trust with your most precious possessions in the world (your babies!).
Checks & Training:
You want to leave your child in the safest, most capable hands possible, right? Anyone that has had any sort of CPR or first aid training around children immediately has a leg up in the babysitting world. You don’t want to leave your children in the hands of a criminal. A police check and Working With Children Check are absolutely ESSENTIAL in terms of the safety of your child. They must not be overlooked! You may be thinking ‘of course…but what exactly are those?’. A police check will provide a list of all types of offences someone has ever been convicted of, while a working with children check is a pass or fail system. The Working with Children Check is a screening that examines charges or offences related to children. In the state of NSW, a Working with Children Check is a requirement for anyone who works in child-related work. There is a reason for this so ensuring your babysitter has a WWCC is paramount. Having both of these checks provides you with the most basic of trust and sense of security.
What better way to find out how the sitter is with kids than to contact the previous families they’ve worked for? Contacting the sitters' referees allows you to get honest and reliable feedback and hear about what they thought of the sitter and if they would recommend them. I would not hire anyone before completing this step. From experience, this is the MOST crucial step and is the step that will give you the clearest idea on who you are working with. Not only does contacting references provide you with insider information, it will also give you an idea of how much experience they have and what ages they’ve worked with.
Finding the perfect babysitter for your little one can seem like quite a daunting task, but with proper preparation and research, it can be a breeze!
