New Year, New School

Happy New Year everyone! We hope you’ve all had an amazing break with your families (we certainly did!) As we send off 2018, a new year begins, and for a lot of little ones, this will be their first year at school - whether it be pre-school, or kindergarten. It can be a daunting time, and easing your kiddos into a school environment can be difficult (we may have shed a tear or two), so we’ve put together a few tips and tricks to help the process along - it’s never going to be smooth sailing, but hopefully some of these things will help your kids get excited about school.

Back To School Gear

We’re well out of kindy at this point, but I don’t think we’ll ever forget the excitement of getting new gear for back to school. Choosing a backpack each year was a feeling near no other thing could match (okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic), but it was fun! If your bubs is feeling unsure about school, or you just want to introduce them to the idea of heading to school, why not take them to choose a backpack? Or, if you want to have the final say, just gift it to them after you’ve chosen. It’s a great little way for bubs to get excited about school - because school now means that they get to show off their new cool backpack!

Making New Friends

Even the most confident of little kiddos can become a bit shy in new environments, but the best thing you can do about this is to assure them that new friends are well and truly on the way. If your bub is heading from pre-school into kindy, it’s likely that one of their friends are heading to the same place - and it’s a good idea to look into it. Having a buddy will help a lot! However, if your bub is about to start pre-school for the first time, ask around with your friends and see if any of their kids are heading to the same school - and organise a play date! Familiar faces are a massive help when transitioning into school, but if that’s not an option - don’t fret. Your bub will do amazingly with the encouragement of you, and the amazing teachers. The key is to make sure your kid knows that they’ll be having a lot of fun at school.

Get Them Involved

Schools provide amazing extracurriculars and after school programs, get your little ones involved! School, whilst being a very exciting experience on it’s own, can become a monotonous routine, and it isn’t always easy for them to focus all day - so give them something to look forward to! Look into what your school offers - sports, choir, even science club - and if you think your bubs would like it, let them try it out! Pre-school may be a little less likely to have structured extracurriculars, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take your bubs to after school programs, let them join a team, or learn a new skill. It’s nice for them to have a reminder that school isn't the only thing they have in their schedule, so there’s always something to be looking forward to.

Hopefully some of these tips will help your little ones get excited about heading to school. It’s a big transition for both them, and you! So we hope we were able to help. Watch this space for more blogs in 2019, it’s off to a great start!
